Sometimes I feel really guilty for not making posts... sometimes life just gets in the way...
People ask me why I seem to be so busy all the time, and why I don't post on Facebook or here on my blog...
Well, see it's like this... that little known part of my life that I've only hinted at... my wildlife rehabbing.... sometimes it just takes my time and I can't get to anything else...
Like the little one above.... for two days straight I was on the phone, talking to vets, arranging transportation, feeding and caring for...
Meet Kezzie!
Kezzie is an American Kestrel, the smallest of the falcon family in North America.
Kezzie was brought to me by our local CO (conservation officer) with a suspected broken wing.
After inspecting it, it didn't appear to look like some other broken
wings I have seen... I took Kezzie to our local vet, but without x-rays,
she couldn't give a diagnosis, so after speaking with a friend, I decided to send Kezzie down to
another community to see if there was anything the vet there could do.
Turns out it was not a broken wing after all, but three calcified
joints which is suspected to be from Metabolic Bone Disease due to poor
nutrition...
Kezzie was way too
tame to have just come out of the wild, and it is suspected she may
have been in someone's care... sadly, while people can be well meaning,
taking in a wild animal requires special care, special food, and a special license to
prevent things like this happening.... they do not eat the same foods we
do like beef products or dairy products and should not be fed them, and it could kill them.
Please please do not take in a wild animal to care for by yourself if
you suspect it to be injured or orphaned, please make sure it truly is
injured or orphaned before taking any action, please get the proper care
and advice from either a veterinarian or a wildlife rehabilitator.
Kezzie will most likely be unreleasable and the only option for her is
either euthanasia, or for someone who can look after her under an
educational permit.
I have given serious thought to applying
for this permit, and while I rehab animals, I don't feel I want to start
visiting schools and the likes just yet, and so I have made the
decision to have my friend Larry look after her... Larry has several other falcons in his care right now, and who knows, at some point I may get Kezzie back.

So when it seems like a long time between posts, please understand, I may be spending my time trying to save a life!
Live, Love & Laugh!
Hugs....Heather
You are doing such wonderful work and I would say it comes first as it should. Kezzie is beautiful and so glad your friend could look after her.
ReplyDeleteWell done to you both.
How fascinating. Good for you, Heather! :o)
ReplyDeleteI am so glad Kezzie didn't have to be put down. She is absolutely beautiful! I too love any bird or wild animal, coyotes, wolves, lynx....no matter they are all special in their own way. I used to spend lots of time with my parents walking around in the bush picking berries and mushrooms as a girl, none of the animals ever approached us in a threatening way. I think if you give them space they won't bother you. Great that you are looking after them, Heather. Animals require lots of care, I have five cats so I know. You have the wild ones so you have to go the extra mile. Cynthia
ReplyDeleteHello Heather, What a sad story but it has a happy ending. I am sure your friend will take good care of Kezzie. Good Job Heather. I hope you are having a lovely Summer. Hugs Judy
ReplyDeleteHi Sis,
ReplyDeleteKezzie is a beautiful bird, it is sad to know that she will never be normal but good for her that she will have a new home and the special care that she needs.
Bravo to Larry!!!
As for you dear sis, great that you found out Kezzie's problem, sad and happy moments lots of time taken but for a cause very worthwhile!
Bravo to you too!
I too believe that all lives are worth saving, birds and animals are a wonderful part of Nature, people like you and Larry give such a helping hand to Mother Nature, it is a joy to know that such goodness and generosity exists!
Hugs
